Border Collie Housedogs

Being new to owning a Border Collie, I would like to ask a general question: can a Border Collie be happy as a house dog going outside only for bathroom? She is a sweet dog and biddable, but cannot be left alone. She is constantly getting in trouble and tearing up things when she goes outside in the yard. Is confining her to the house the best solution?

Sorry to be so blunt but in my opinion - no, no, no, no, no. Can she live that way? Yes. Is she happy? Well... would a world-class long distance runner be happy locked in a closet all day or stuck behind a desk? The reason your dog is getting into trouble is because she is bored. Active minds and idle Border paws are the Devil's playground. Does she need to run 87 miles a day? No. Should you be doing active things with your dog? Absolutely. That's the great thing about this breed. They are talented at so many things and bright enough to do about whatever you ask. Find something for you and your dog to do together. You'll both be better off for it.
