Selling Your Used Items?

Trying to sell your used items can be a real pain sometimes. Putting ads in the paper, putting up posters, arranging a garage sale, or trying to trade it in for a newer model. All of these can be a huge hassle and in the end, you might not get the best price for your items despite all your effort. Border Collie Rescue has turned this problem into a benefit for both you and the dogs, and here's how it works. When your item is donated to Border Collie Rescue, BCR provides you with a receipt for the item donated. It is legitimate and allowable for you to value the item at the retail price of the item (in its current condition) or an actual appraised value. You are then allowed to take a tax deduction based on the contributed value and Border Collie Rescue is free to use or sell the item, usually for a wholesale price, and use the proceeds to further our mission.

Here's an example of how it might benefit both you and Border Collie Rescue: You have an old tractor that you aren't using any more that is perhaps six or seven years old, with a bit of wear and tear on it. The best offer you've had for it so far is $3,000. You could wait to see if you can manage to get a higher price for it or you could skip all the hassle and donate it directly to Border Collie Rescue. The tractor has a resale value of $12,000, so if you donate it to BCR, you get a receipt for the full $12,000. If you are in a 35% tax bracket, the tax break for the contribution is considerably more than $3000. Border Collie Rescue then has a few options; we might sell the tractor wholesale or at auction (meaning that Border Collie Rescue would probably receive about $3000), we could use the tractor or we could try to advertise and sell the tractor ourselves. So you see, it's a win-win situation. Not only do you get to trade-in your old tractor for more money than you might be able to sell it for, but it is hassle-free (in other words, "haggle-free") and Border Collie Rescue benefits enormously as well. You solve your own headache and end up making a wonderful contribution to the dogs at the same time.
