I know, he is breaking my heart too. Back when he was first posted, I tried contacting collie and mixed breed rescues in that area. I only heard back from one mixed breed group and she was trying to take a break from rescue and did not have room.

I just don't know what to do for this poor boy.

I emailed the shelter today and offered again to "sponsor" him. I have not heard back.

I will try to call as well.

He looks like he really needs to be loved...

Cooper really needs to get out of there ASAP... he didn't get on the rescue wagon to Wisconsin. The rescue wagon did take 33, but "they did not need another black dog," even though he is a very nice dog and young.

Cooper is shy. Now that he is 6 months it's getting much harder to get on the rescue wagon. You have to have a behavior assessment to get on after 6 months and they don't have the resources. His sister was adopted on Christmas Eve.

The woman at the shelter said to me if we could help move him, "she would be
eternally greatful." She was getting upset on the phone. She said they had to put-down some really wonderful dogs this week, and it killed her to pull their photos from petfinder.

She got in 10 additional dogs yesterday.

I've been watching him for awhile now, and everytime I scroll down his pic it breaks my heart. I know it's true about the "black dogs" but it doesn't make it any easier to hear. :( I hope someone can prove them wrong, and is willing to take in this sweetie. I'd be willing to pitch in for pulling and transport fees.

I will pitch in for him as well. He has some really striking white markings, especially his front feet, which have white "gloves". He is very cute! He would be a perfect bc mix for the many people who say they "want a border collie, but without such high energy".

What does it take to help with BC rescue? I have owned a BC before? I live in Columbia, TN.

Perhaps you can connect with West and East TN BC rescue and see what sort of help they need?

I asked a rescuer in CT if she'd consider taking Cooper into her program if I could get him up this way, but she cannot help out at this time. :(

Anyone have any ideas for this sweet fella that's never had a chance to be loved and is running out of time??

I make trips from Columbia, TN to Roanoke, VA about every couple of months if a dog needs to go that way. My aussie mix is about nine years old. I got her when I got divorced to help keep my BC company. Everything was fine until after the BC started having seizures. Then she would attack the aussie visciously for no apparent reason. I was in the floor between them one time when she decided to attack and she got my arm instead twice, and didn't want to let go. I had to call and have my 17 year old son drive me to the ER. I talked to the vet about it and tried to try a few different things. They were both always crated when I was not home and were raised that way since pups. About six months after she bit me, she grabbed my son by the throat. She didn't grab him as hard as she had grabbed me, but all I could think of was that if she had she could have killed him. I had her put down after that. I could not risk a human life. The vet said it was possible that whatever caused the seizures caused something to change in the brain. It broke my heart. I had done a fly ball class with her and an agility class with her. She absolutely loved them. I could throw the tennis ball for over an hour, but she still wanted to play ball. She had strong herding instinct. I could walk her in the park, but I never was able to easily walk down the street with her very well because she wanted to heard the cars. She would push on the leash until her front feet were off the ground.

My aussie ended up becoming very timid after the ordeal so I have to let her get used to people and animals. She was even scared of my daughters eight pound dog at first. Now she will play with him some when we visit, but after a while she does get irritated when he wants to use her legs as a chew toy. She still doesn't hurt him though. Watching the 45# dog gently play tug of war with a rope toy and an eight pound dog on the other end can be amusing.

We went in to visit at moms and both of my son's dogs were there. He has a small sized very friendly pit bull and a BC/lab mix. When those two were playing and growling at each other in play, my aussie mix ran in between them and separated them. It was like she was telling them to stop it. I would like to know what was going on in her head.

Luv Dogs,

If you have a behavior question that you'd like an answer to, you should post it in the behavior section. I'm sure you'll get more answers. Did you post here originally because you were thinking of helping Cooper? Some folks take on the responsibility of fostering and finding homes for dogs on their own, others (like myself) foster through a rescue. Many who can't foster, offer their services to pull and transport. Good for you that you're considering it.

Cooper is still there I guess. He's the cutest dog. I hope I'm not nagging too much. He's just one of those dogs that is pulling at my heartstrings. Everyday I check here to see if anyone's picked him up, or if I see the dreaded NLA heading.

I have been communicating with Bedfor A/C about sweet Cooper.

Here is the update I got today:

We are going to try one more time with Cooper and the transport as he passed his behavior test this week. I should know by the end of the week if he will get to go. As for sponsoring him, it is not really a money issue as much as a space issue. Lets see if he goes this time and if not, we will talk further then. Thanks for your help with this sweet guy!

I think this is the transport to Wisconsin... I have told them to keep me in the loop and asked if there is any additional insight on him from taking his behavior test. Certainly a positive! IF someone has an option closer for Cooper, and since he doesn't have a spot on the transport yet, it would be great.....

Thanks Karoline for the update. It makes me feel a teensy bit better. Of course nothing's a sure thing and the transport denied him earlier. Keeping everything crossed for him.

I also had emailed with the Humane Society affilated with this shelter. I offerred to sponsor him if they could pull him.

I heard back today and certainly appreciate that I heard back from them...

Karoline, My name is Carolyn Fisher and I am a volunteer with SBCHA (humane assoc.) in Shelbyville, Tn. We are trying to find a way to help the collie mix, the problem is not as much money as space. We are a no kill shelter and we are very overcrowded. We have 3 border collies at our shelter and adoptions are down. I will talk to Brenda and try to do something. I will let you know. Carolyn

So, still nothing set for Cooper.. and it sounds like that shelter is really over-crowded. At least people are trying and hopefully we can figure something out for this sweet boy. Brenda(who she references) is the woman who works at the shelter who I spoke to last week.

Georgia,

I wasn't looking for any obedience tips, but I did read some of the agression section. My dog has fear agression which she has improved in, but I watch her closely with new dogs. I like the way it was explained. She has gotten better with people too, but I have to watch the well meaning people that "know" dogs and think that all dogs love them. Uhm, my ex boyfriend being one of them. He called her "Hellhound" and was scared to death of her after their first encounter. After about the fifth visit she was all over him wanting petted.

I did post a thread on one of the sections about possible transport for TN to VA

I just received an email that Cooper was approved for transport, but has to pass a physical exam still.. so he's in-line, but does not have a guaranteed spot yet.

If anyone is near him and has space, I will sponsor his vet care etc (whatever he needs-- I don't think he needs anything, but just offering if there is a surprise).

Cooper looks like such a sweet dog. IF he gets on transport that is wonderful, if someone else can take him that opens up space on the potential transport for another dog.. maybe even another "all black dog."

Thanks,

Karoline
