Fenced area size for a BC

New postby estwest on Wed Apr 28, 2010 11:50 am

Hi everybody,

I’m a new owner of a BC pup – 3 months old. I’m going to create a fenced area on my backyard and I’m looking for an advise on what would be a reasonably-sized area for him to play and exercise (I’d like to avoid fencing the entire yard, but I also want to make him comfortable and provide ample space for training). Any advise is very much appreciated.

Hi, and congratulations on your new pup! :D

Since my entire lot is .18 acres and my fenced back yard is approximately the size of a postage stamp, I'll have to let other people answer your actual question. But I did want to welcome you to the boards, at least.

ajones, thanks for the warm welcome :) . The puppy is great, very outgoing, curious and intelligent. My daughter is starting his obedience training tomorrow and we are planning to continue with it at advanced levels as he makes progress, which looks like is not going to be a problem for him (he really is a "smarty pants"). Our backyard is large (probably closer to a 1 acre) but is of extremely irregular shape, plus there are some other issues making the whole-yard fence a problem, therefore I'm looking for an advice on how big of a chunk I need to allocate for Blaze to run around comfortably.

Well, I'm very jealous of your spacious yard! :D

Sounds like your family and Blaze are getting along just fine. I look forward to hearing more about him as he and your daughter work on obedience! Oh, and we always enjoy seeing photos, too, if you care to post any.

I think I can answer your question in a few different ways. If you are fencing for exercise then the answer to your question is; How far can you throw a Frisbee or ball? I would say I have an area about 125 feet long by about 50 feet wide and find that adequate to play with and exercise my guys.
If you are fencing for just potty time and some clicker training, and you intend for the bulk of the exercise to be walks, hikes, etc. then you could get away with a smaller area.
And finally; Welcome to BCR!

joe, thanks for your reply. We'll probably combine a morning jog/walk (my wife is a runner) with an afternoon fetch/Frisbee, so 125'x50' recommendation sounds like what I'm looking for. I should be able to find a stretch like that on my yard. Any other advise, among them - what kind of fencing to use? Thanks a lot again!

And just to clarify - he is not going to be unsupervised outside of the house.

Along the front facing side of the yard I used black chain-link 5 feet high. I wanted it to look good from the front of the house so spent some money there. For the rest I used black vinyl coated wire deer fence. Easy to install, very secure and really pretty cheap.

Privacy fencing has some advantages if you live in an area with heavy foot traffic. But, since he wont be out unsupervised, that may not be as big of a factor.

Welcome to the boards by the way!
