Nana Bear is going to the Bridge

New postby Hulls_Haven on Tue Dec 30, 2008 11:48 pm

It is with deep sadness I tell you all that tomorrow our dear old Nana, whom I call "My Nana Bars" is going to Rainbow Bridge.
Our dear friend and vet Shannon, is going to come to Ruth's home, and she will gently send her on her way in the comfort of the only place Nana found love and warmth. Nana came to us about two months ago, from Easton IL. She has a lot of health problems, including hypothyroidism, causing her to be grossly overweight. She is also completely blind now. Today Shannon did blood work on Nana, and found she is very sick.
We can rest in the knowledge that she was loved at the end.
We love you Nana Bars. Go gently my girl.

I am very sorry to hear this news, Sally. Poor Nana Bear, to have languished so long with her multiple health problems before coming to you. I am glad Shannon will come out to Ruth's home to make things as easy as possible both for Ruth and for Nana. I will be thinking of all of you tomorrow.

Thank you Ange.
My biggest delimma is, I want to be there for Nana, although I know Ruth will hold her and love on her at the end, and be there for her...I still feel I should too. But I am also worried that my tears will make her afraid. I don't want her to be scared. I live with the guilt of having bawled when they put my old GSD down, and I think I upset her even more.
Ruth is so much stronger than I am. I know she will cry, but she will have the backbone to wait until Nana has passed over. Sometimes I hate how much of a wimp I am.

It is so hard, isn't it, to know what's best in these situations? I know I have cried every single time I've had to euthanize a pet, so I know what you mean about being emotional.

Do you think it would help Ruth if you were there? If so, maybe you could say your own goodbye to Nana Bear and then excuse yourself for a few minutes, returning to console Ruth? DH has never been able to stay with me during our pets' final moments, but it still helps to have him there afterward.

Just an idea...I'm sure whatever you choose will be the right decision. And, as you said, Nana Bear will leave this life knowing love and comfort at last.

I am so sorry to hear this. But you are not at all a wimp Sally. You have a huge heart and you should never be sorry or feel guilty about that. Whatever decision you make will be the right one. And all of you should rest easy in the knowledge that you gave this girl the love she needed and were able to make this compassionate decision for her. She will be grateful.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you today.

Thanks girls.
I have to work this morning. It isn't going to be easy knowing what is coming.
I think Ange is right...say my goodbyes, and excuse myself.

Well, Nana is gone.
Honestly, I hope I can go so peacefully. I decided to stay. I brought her some double cheesecake ice cream, because poor Nana was always eating low fat kibble, and Lord knows she likely never had anything so good. The look on her face when she tasted it was so cute. I gave her a big bowl of it.
Shannon came in, we loved on Nana, and she went to her rest.
We love you Nana Bars. No more suffering for you.

Thank you for fulfilling your promise to care for Nana Bear the rest of her days, Sally. I'm glad that the whole experience, while sad, was also peaceful for both Nana and the humans who loved her.

Rest in peace, Nana Bear.

Run free at the bridge, sweet Nana Bear -- all those that loved you so well at the end will see you there someday.
