Hi, Rachel, and welcome to the boards! :)

There are several transports that run out of Kentucky to various points in the northeast. The generic answer to your question, then, is that you contact the transport coordinator for that run and see if your newly adopted dog can be added and what arrangements you would need to make. Do you know whose transport you're wanting to use?

ETA: I dug up an email from my local shelter, the Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society (BGWCHS), and noticed that a transport last month did go through Hagerstown. In case this is the transport you're referencing, I'll go ahead and paste in the contact info for the transport coordinator:
Deana Wehr
Rescue/Transport Manager
http://www.bgwchs.petfinder.com
Bowling Green / Warren County Humane Society
Location: 1925 Louisville Road
Mail: P. O. Box 1456
Bowling Green, KY 42102
Phone: 270-842-8572

Deana's email address: deana -dot- wehr -at- insightbb -dot- com .

FYI, unless you adopted the dog from BGWCHS, your dog would be considered a "hitch hiker," so that's the language to use if you ask Deana if she has room for him or her and inquire about rates.

ETA #2: (Really, I'll quit after this one! :) ) I also found this info in that earlier email: "We only allow hitch hikers if the transport is not filled w/ dogs/cats from our shelters. Hitcher crates are $45 each."

thanks so much for your info. i saw a post from teresa cash saying she would be making a trip this way on the 19th and wanted to get a ride since she's private. my understanding was that shelter transports are hard to get on b/c their dogs have priority and they rarely have room. but i will give this person a shout out. i'm trying to rescue just outside bowling green at the logan county humane society and they only transport to chicago. i'm in no. va, around dc area so if anyone has any other good advice i appreciate it.
thanks all

Teresa is the transport driver for BGWCHS, and she also does private runs, as well. In fact, according to her Facebook page today (she's referencing the 60 intakes BGWCHS had just today :( ):
I'm doing a paid cargo van transport again THIS weekend, 6/11/11, again to MD, PA & NJ. If anyone can take even ONE dog or cat, it will save that animal AND free up space for another animal in our already overcrowded shelter. I'll deliver cats/kittens from the Bowling Green/Warren County Humane Society for FREE. Just contact Deana Kristen Wehr or I to reserve crate space.

I don't know if the timing would work out for you to get your dog on this weekend's run, but I just wanted to toss it out there as a possibility. My guess is that the run later this month is a BGWCHS one, but I haven't seen anything confirming that.

The one time I pulled from Logan Co., for a long-distance adopter, the folks there were very easy to work with. Best of luck with your plans!

that would be great timing....i just didn't know how to get in touch with her. i did, per your info, send deana a message requesting info on hitching a ride asap, so hopefully she will get my message and get back to me. i didnt know of any other specific transports, i was given teresas name by a rescue here in va who doesn't work with logan county but is trying to facilitate the process. if anyone knows of a back up plan, i might need one :). thanks for all

If you're on Facebook, you can find Teresa there. Or this is the email address she has posted on her profile (but I don't think it's the account she checks most often): iresqk9snky -at- yahoo -dot- com .

Since Teresa noted in today's post (the one I quoted above) that you could let Deana know, maybe just shoot Deana a second message saying you've learned Teresa is doing a private transport this weekend and wondering if you could be put in touch with her for that one? That should cover all your bases.

well, sad to say all the large crates for this weekends trip are taken. the next bowling green trip isnt till the 25th and I'm not sure if they will have room or not. If not, anyone else know of another transport in that area that might have availabilities to come to the northeast?
Thanks

Sorry to hear there is not room on this weekend's transport. When Teresa transports privately, her vehicle is much smaller than the shelter's truck, so I expect large crates fill very quickly.

Although I've heard of other shelters and organizations in KY doing NE transports, unfortunately, I do not have any specifics about those runs. I hope someone else can provide ideas about other options.

Peterson runs through several cities in TN. So if you could find a way to get the dog there (like maybe Crossville, TN), then Peterson might work. Of course that is a very, very big "if." And with the very strict requirements that Peterson has, it may not be an option anyway. But I thought I would mention it just in case there might be a volunteer network with that shelter and someone who is willing to drive a little. Even if Peterson won't work, I wonder if they might be able to recommend other transport services that they know about in KY.
