Cooper from Sherman, TX is home!!!

New postby Corpus_Mommy on Sat Feb 21, 2009 9:14 am

Day 2 with Cooper and its going VERY well! He doesn't seem to be tramatized from the shelter or the extremely long road trip at all. He is so gorgeous too! He is quite thin and I suppose it will take time to put weight on because he plays so much with my heeler. I'm more concerned today with his back legs. I don't know if he's walking funny because of the weight or if something could be wrong. My 16 yr old terrier mix isn't warming up to him. She gives a ferce growl and a snap when Cooper comes around and he runs away like the wind. lol She will come around in time. She's old, going blind and deaf so I guess its to be expected. We go to the vet on Monday afternoon to figure out what heartworm treatment we are going to use. Hopefully he is just a light positive. Anyway, I'll keep everyone updated along the way!

I'm trying to upload a picture but its saying file to big? Help please? I was going to take more while my daughter was napping but Cooper decided to nap with her in the room. Mandy, my red heeler foster was adopted this morning :( so now Cooper is the big dog of the house. No doubt I'll have another foster by the end of the week but this give me a lot of one on one time with Coop. He's been really really calm today. I guess he's just getting used to the new home. Anyway, please give me some tips on the photo so you can all see him!

Do you have a photobucket account? Accounts are free and that is how I upload the pictures and it's pretty easy.

You can email the pictures if you would like and I can get them posted for you. I'm excited to see Cooper. :)

Please don't pay attention to the mess behind him. lol He looks small in the picture but is actually a good size boy. Shows no interest in balls or frisbee. I hate to say this but its almost like he's a little hard of hearing. Something just doesn't seem right. I've been fostering for 8 years so I can normally tell if something is wrong right away. Even if I don't know exactly what it is and something seems wrong with him. He played for hours when I first brought him home but hasn't played since. I don't know if he's just really tired or maybe depressed but he shouldn't be in this house. I expected him to be bouncing off the walls but he is nothing like that.

I was a little concerned about his hearing too, but he seemed responsive to sounds we made in the truck on the road (whistling, etc.). He reacted to all the noise in the rest stops we stopped in also. He has been through a lot the last week or so he probably just needs the rest. Vetted and neutered on Wednesday, transported all day Thursday way into the night (I can tell you he didn't sleep much in the truck), probably didn't get much rest in the shelter, etc. etc. He has only been there a short while and it may take some time to get used to his surroundings and find his place in the pack.

I hope his legs are OK, he didn't walk around too much for us, he was so terrified. It might have to do with rough treatment at the shelter or vet, maybe his incision is bothering him in some way (maybe the stiches are pulling when he walks). Is it a definate limp??? As I told you the shelter guy was in such a rush to get back to the office he literally ripped the dressings of him, It spun poor Cooper around like one of those old fashion tops....i would guess about 8-10 feet of 2" tape bandage, fur and all. It happened so fast I couldn't stop the guy (idiot). It made Cooper squeek so I know it hurt him.

Hi Howard, well its not a limp really its just walking funny, really hard to explain. Hopefully your right about the incision and kennel trama. I take all my dogs to one of the best vets in the area so I have faith if something is wrong we will have it figured out in no time. He is a very sweet boy. Almost like an old dog trapped in a puppys body.
