Hello everyone, we've just adopted this 10 month old little guy, and they told us he's a border collie mix. Does anyone have a guess about what he might be mixed with? He is all black except for one 1 toe-tip and weighs about 35lbs.

Any suggestions about helping him adapt to his new home with our 1 year old Lab mix? He's pretty keen on being the boss, as is my spayed female and he will also fight over treats and food. He follows my husband around (ie Shadow) except for at night he likes to sleep outside in the year near the door. He was picked up by the shelter as a stray. Many thanks for any help!

Very cute dog! I couldn't say what mix he is though. You could always get his DNA tested. I found it very interesting and surprising in my two mixes.

The first thing I saw in him was Chow...especially in that last picture.

Here are some pictures I found of some BC/Chow mixes...

DNA tests don't work. There are a ton of videos out there made by people who own PUREBRED dogs with papers and the DNA testing has come back with a bunch of ridiculous breeds.

And JMO, but all of the dogs in your signature look purebred BC to me.

I never really looked into the accuracy of the testing since it was a blood test offered by my vet, but the "results" were surprising. I do know for a fact that 2 of the BC in my sig are mixes which makes my dogs appearances as reliable as DNA testing.

Are the two dogs you're talking about *known* mixes, or rescues who you are calling mixes based on the DNA test you've mentioned? I am just curious.

Thanks for all the responses! One other thing I've noticed is that the tips of his ears curl backwards - does anyone know if that happens with a specific breed or is that due to some other circumstance? Also, he's extremely fond of water. I can't keep him out of the shower or his water dish. He's got so much personality!

Many thanks for everyone's help!

(and thanks for sharing the chow mix photos!)
