Introducing Tilt

New postby Aquarius89 on Wed Mar 17, 2010 6:12 pm

More like Tilt O'Whirl! He is a real handful, but is responding very well to corrections, etc. He came in last night very over stimulated. This morning we went for a brisk walk at 8:00am (I haven't seen that time of day in a looong time) with Mickey because they weren't getting along. Then we had breakfast.

Afterwards, I took all the dogs out to romp around a bit. I gave Tilt some time with each dog in the backyard so they could get a feel for each other and things have seemed to settled down a LOT better since then and he is really understanding where his place. I'm quite happy because I was worried about it.

This afternoon my friend came over and we went to a nearby park with him and Jersey to get some energy out and he snoozed for most of the time between then and now.

I am using NILIF with him for a few days and so far, he's doing great. He seems to have some resource guarding issues, but we're working on it. He is also very herdy with cars.

No accidents in the house so far, either! One thing I am loving about having an older pup? Bigger bladders! :D

Anyway, on to some photos. :)

And here's a sequence of fluke shots I got when a car was going by.

Sees something moving.

We'll need to work on that. Any tips are appreciated because I've never had to deal with a car chaser before!

Thanks for looking.

He's beautiful! Weasel had that car herding problem when I first brought her home. Nothing like your four month old puppy popping out of her harness to flatten herself in front of a truck, giving it the "eye." No useful suggestions to offer, just commiseration.

I was so busy looking at the pictures I missed the car chasing part. I have/had two car chasers. Capp is one but Mozart was worse. I did get Mozart away from it, Capp still stalks but doesn't chase. I used clicker training and treats. With Mozart on leash I started far from the highway and just started walking toward it. I did that to see at what distance Mozart would start to react to the traffic. As soon as he even started to become aware of the traffic I would stop there and do some clicker training. Nothing tough just basic stuff with my goal being first to redirect his attention and second to get him to just sit and focus on me instead of the road. I worked in short sessions and tried to do it at least once a day. After he got comfortable where we were I would then walk closer to the road and again look for him to begin to react to the passing traffic and repeat the process all over again. Eventually he was able to sit beside me ten feet from the road and still ignore the traffic. It wasn't a fast fix but it did work for Zart.
