Thea in Florida *** ADOPTED ***

New postby starfish on Sun Apr 04, 2010 9:16 am

Her name is Thea. And it is going to take someone very special to give her a forever home. Thea needs a soft but firm touch and someone with the patience to allow her to blossom and feel safe on her timetable.

Thea is a purebred border collie that was rescued from a border collie Puppy Mill in September 2009 where she was kept in deplorable conditions. After a round-about trip to Florida she had her first bath in probably years. Her fur was so matted that she had to have her bum and tail shaved. She landed on our doorstep in October.

When Thea first arrived she would hide in her crate, coming out only when coaxed with food or being physically pulled out. She was scared of everything: people, dogs, doorways, furniture, hard flooring and especially loud sounds and sudden movements. She would not walk on tile or wood floors, only carpet and grass. The leash was her enemy and she would bite it and lie down when a leash was clipped on to her.

With 6 foster siblings Thea quickly came out of her shell. She loves to run with the “pack” and will need room to run, perhaps a canine sibling or two. She doesn’t quite understand toys but she loves chew bones. She has learned to walk through doorways, walk on solid flooring and has even conquered the doggie door. She has trouble with steps, finding it easier to go up and difficult to come down. She’s also learned to walk on a leash. She will not be happy in a home with any cats, she is obsessed with them. Thea likes clicker training and has learned to sit on command. She is very food motivated and can be coaxed in uncomfortable situations with treats.

Thea likes routine. She has learned what it means when we say, “time to go outside” and “in your crate”. She will be happiest in a home where there is a definite routine. She likes women more than men but has bonded with her foster dad. She’ll just take some time and patience.

Thea is about 4-5 years old. She is spayed, up to date on vaccinations and heartworm preventative, and is microchipped. If you are interested in adopting Thea, please visit our website and fill out an application from our Adoption Process page. There will be an adoption donation and you will be required to sign an adoption contract. If you have questions, please feel free to contact us.

Thea is being fostered in Palm Bay, Florida.

We do not adopt out of state. You must submit an application as the first step in the process. You cannot visit a dog until we've received and reviewed your application and contacted you about scheduling a visit. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

Bump for Thea, too. She's been in rescue for a long time now. She has come so far from the way she was when she was first rescued from the puppy mill. She also recently learned to swim and thinks it's the greatest thing. Thea gets along with other dogs (does better with other males) but needs a home without cats. She is shy at first, but will warm up with a little time.

Here's a picture of one of Thea's not so graceful entries into the pool.

Thea in FL - Still looking for her forever home . . .

New postby starfish on Sun Dec 19, 2010 4:59 pm

Thea is still looking for her forever home. Thea was one of over 100 border collies rescued from a middle Tennessee puppy mill in September of 2009. Thea was traumatized by her experience in the puppy mill, but she has made tremendous progress over the past year. She will likely never be "normal" (whatever that is!), but she is a very happy, loving, sweet girl who has learned to enjoy the heck out of life. Her favorite things include her big Jolly Ball, swimming, snuggling, and eating. She would love to have a person all of her own. That person will need to be very patient with her as she adjusts to her new life in her new home. But, I promise it will be worth it.

Pretty girl. Reminds me so much of my first BC, Ricochet.

Good luck to Thea, hope she finds her forever home soon!

It warms my heart to see Thea's happy face, and I really enjoyed seeing her in action again in the video.

We're sending good adoption vibes to Thea from Kentucky, especially from Crazy Old Man Ody. I hope the person or people who can appreciate her for all her good qualities come along soon.

Thea was adopted about three months ago. I didn't say anything at the time because I was only cautiously optimistic that it would work out. Thea is a lovely dog, but comes with a lot of baggage due to her time at the puppymill. It can be a bit draining to deal with for the typical pet owner. But, it's been over three months now and they have been giving us mostly good reports, so I think I can finally safely say that Thea has officially been adopted. :D

Thrilled to see this update for Thea! Congratulations to her and to her new family! :D

And many thanks to all those who took the time and patience to work with her to help her become adoptable...I have some idea of what challenges that process presented for you all.
