Hey Amy, thanks for asking after Ike :)

Sandra picked up Ike on Monday. She says he crates well, rides well, seems overall very sweet, greeted her farm dog then proceeded to ignore her. Badly needs a groom, of course. He is now de-stressing and relaxing. Hopefully more of his personality will come out as he adjusts.

Ike's is definitely a cautionary tale. We all know from the earlier post that Ike went to "DJ" and "Bark N Ride." Well, neither one is a rescue. Ike was moved from the shelter by an individual (DJ) into boarding (Bark N Ride), based on sponsorship funds sent by a third party (who saw him on Facebook). No receiving rescue. So Ike was vetted and held in boarding, with the shelter telling Jill that he no longer needed rescue. Not so. "Out of the shelter" is not the same thing as "rescued," when the dog has no place to go. The tragedy is that Ike would have had a rescue, and possibly even a home by now. But he was taken off the radar and may never have resurfaced had DJ not posted here.

Of course, now the rescue spot is full. But Jill and Sandra (and I) felt an obligation to this boy. So he is safe with Sandra and will get the next avaible foster spot.

I know there are several groups out there that pull dogs into boarding without a rescue backing them. It's sad to think how many dogs might be stuck like Ike was :(

It is with sorrow that I report that Ike passed away in his sleep last night. He did not show any signs of illness at any time during his stay, and was not scheduled for his vet appointment until next week. So, there are no answers.

From Sandra:
I am sorry you won't have an opportunity to meet the fine old gentleman and glad that his life ended in the peace and quiet of a country location. I buried him at the tree line in the shade. May he run free and happy over the bridge.

I personally want to thank Jill for saying "Go get him!!" when he was discovered stuck in boarding, and to Sandra for doing so. Ike spent his final days enjoying the country air, versus a terrifying end at animal control or a lonely end at a busy boarding kennel.

Be at peace, Ike.

Awe, I'm sorry to hear this. Poor guy. I'm glad, though, that he got to spend his last days with Sandra.

needless to say, i am devastated about poor Ike. The only thing i can say is, sometimes people and animals hold it all together while under stress and when the stress disappears, all can be let go. Ike knew he was with people that loved and cared about him finally, and he could let go and move on. I can only wish the people that prolonged him from getting where he needed to be will learn something from this. The universe takes care of its own.................. Rest in peace, Ike. You will be on my senior page with Sad Jimmy.......and will NEVER be forgotten

I, too, am very sorry to hear this news. Thanks to both Jill and Sandra for giving this boy a chance. I think you are right Jill and that he knew he was safe and he could let go.

Rest in peace sweet boy.

I have not met the famous Sandra, although I have been on the sidelines for some of her heroic transports. I suspect she has a halo which can only be seen by the BC's she saves. Thanks to all of you who tried to save this old fellow. It means a lot that he was in a place of peace and comfort for his last days.

Thanks to all who tried to truly save him at the end.

And unending disdain (the politest word I could conjure up) to those who "saved" him by leaving him deserted for weeks in the boarding facility. Yesterday I did the last leg of a transport of a BC mix and Fox hound mix from Bark & Ride to Harriett at Ruffus Rescue. There are others that we are trying to get to Atlanta from Bark & Ride.

Bark & Ride will be under new management beginning Monday.

I could swear I posted on this thread last night, but I don't see my post now, so I'll just add my thanks to all those who persisted in helping Ike and my hope that he rests in peace.
