Well, all was going well for this young fellow, estimated around 1-2 years old when the shelter found out that he was HW+, the rescue that was looking at him backed out. Tina at the shelter said: "Toby is extremely loving and kind. He's very submissive, but has a strong herding instinct; he tries to herd us when we walk him. :) He also gets along well with the other dogs. Just guessing he is about 1-2 years old".

I have asked Tina how long we have until he has to come out, I'll let you know when she emails or calls me back. Fosters anyone?

He is gorgeous!

On a completely unrelated aside, Toby is my brother's name.

Hi:

Who did the HW test (shelter?)...via SNAP, microscopic eval? Is he "low" or "high" positive? Gosh, I am in NY, but am finishing the final weeks w/Astro's HW treatment w/success. No local rescue? What are the chances of getting transport to the NorthEast if time runs out?

LHoltz,

I'm not sure about the HW test, but probably snap... there are no local open foster spots/ so no local rescue. That said, ABC would probably try to find boarding for him which is NEVER ideal, but better than the alternative.

I've used Rescue Roadtrip before and they will pick-up from outside of Houston and take him to the NE... so I think we could get him trasported pretty easily to a good receiver in the NE. Not free of course, but neither is boarding and I'm sure everyone would prefer he go to a home then boarding. Lesia's working on him, but let me know if you think there is a space in the NE. I'd so much rather work on raising $200 to send him to the NE than $200 for his smart border collie brain to be confined in boarding.

Thanks!

Well, this poor guy can't catch a break. I was in touch with the shelter all weekend, I was suppose to pick him up tomorrow, thanx to Penny and ABC Rescue.

The shelter called me this morning and said he was sick, yet still they vaccinated him. Said he has eye and nose discharge and she was concerned it was distemper.
I had her take him to a local vet, had to call in my CC number just to get the exam. The Vet said she would have to run a distemper test to be sure and it may not be accurate because the shelter vaccinated him. Said he is a very sick boy, quite thin, dull, not eating, covered in fleas, worms, lots of discharge from his nose and mouth so only open mouth breathing. She said she would put him on fluids, antibiodics, bloodwork, radiograhphs and the swab and blood test for distemper. This is going to be very expensive! No rescue discount. She would know in 48 - 72 hours a prognosis. The distemper test would take until the end of the week.
ABC said they would try to treat him, but a distemper diagnosis could be a death sentence due to the neurological complications which can take weeks, months and even years to show up. We would try to move him to a more rescue friendly vet as soon as possible.

Such a quandry, no good choices.

Hi:

Oh no! Plus he is HW+...it will be a miracle if this dogs pulls through -- thank you for giving it your best...I hope your efforts pay off -- in his present condition, I don't think he could withstand a trip to the Northeast, but I will continue to watch this thread for updates on his progress. Also, it may be difficult getting a Health Cert. to even travel across state lines w/his numerous medical problems. Poor baby, hang in there!

We have elected to try and give him a chance. He is at the Local Vet, we will move him closer to us today or tomorrow. We have sent the distemper test off, won't know for 4- 5 days she said. Meanwhile he is on fluids and antibiodics and supportive care. If it is distemper, obviously, not alot of hope, but didn't want to make that final decision until we knew for sure. If is is a severe case of KC or upper respiratory he should start responding some before the test results return. He will have a rocky 72 hours. Does not help he was covered in fleas and very thin.

It just makes me so mad that for 3 days the shelter was emailing me and asking us questions to qualify our rescue and nobody bothered to go see the dog was SICK! They told me he was healthy, not til I was going to get him did I get a call that he was sick, very sick. We could of started treatment 3 days earlier!

This is going to cost the rescue a bundle, which we always hate to do, because there is so many to save. We will try to keep the website updated on his progress http://www.allbordercollierescue.com, there is a paypal link if you have anything extra to give towards his fight.

Thanx for all those good wishes and prayers, he needs them still.

Let's hope it's KC and not distemper. I have to look up my paypal account, but I'll send you a little something towards his treatment.

Leisa,
see if Penny can consulte with Dr. Scott. I helped find Dr. Scott for Sammi and her distemper. Perhaps Dr. Scott can give you her distemeper supplaments and you can go to the dog and administer them. This will make a huge difference on his imune system!!
Again, vacinations killing dogs.......

I spent all day going to get Toby, I think he needs a new name, from the Vet clinic in Richwood and taking him to the one in Spring. Dr. Scott's clinic, in fact. Toby was standing up, tilting his head when I talked to him and wagging his tail. Sweet boy, great spirit! He is very very thin, which won't help him any. He had eaten this morning, he wants to live, he does. They had him on IV Fluids and a Baytril and some Vitamins, etc. Everything they did was great, just really expensive!
I took him to the new Vet clinic and he seemed weaker, but we're going to try. He's back on fluids, continuing the Baytril, gentocin for his eyes and nose and some groceries. Radiographs and bloodwork to come. Think we'll know in 72 hours if he's going to get on the other side of this thing. We should have the test results from the distemper test back by weeks end. He's got a long road ahead. But, when I took one look at him, it made spending my whole day transporting and caring for him worth it. He's worth saving! Pray it's not distemper, in this case if he has been vaccinated for distemper anytime during his short life, it will save his life.

Thanx to all, you don't have to do paypal, you can just send a check if you like, every penny counts. We are definitely going to need it for this guy, the one day cost $331!

Lesia,

Thank you so much for helping this boy... I am so praying this guy can pull through and get to enjoy a good afternoon. I am so thankful you put him above all else today and are getting him everything he needs.

It's really amazing of you Lesia, thank you.

I know Toby can feel the love and support you have for him and that makes a difference to him for certain.

I don't think the Paypal link is working.
