Grain free foods

New postby BayouBCR on Thu Apr 17, 2008 12:37 am

Does anyone know of a food that's grain free AND has a formula without chicken or beef? Kodah's itchiness is just getting worse, and the vet suggested trying a food change to see if it might help. He's been on EVO, so it's not a grain problem. He's been on chicken and beef based foods over the years, and I've never noticed a difference. Of course, if it IS a food allergy, it's hard to say if it's actually chicken since a lot of the foods have another protein source thrown in there - turkey, fish, etc - and I haven't really tracked the secondary protein sources to this point outside of lamb (which Reece is allergic to). So, ideally, I'd like to find a food that is a more unusual protein source (venison, bison, duck, etc) without it having EXTRA protein sources. Not picky at all, am I?

There's always the option of using a prescription diet to see if it helps with the itchiness, but if I can find an alternative, I'd prefer it.

Courtney,

I was having the same probelm with my Tonto, we tried switching foods several different times and nothing was working. Finally I was recommended this by a friend whose dog was constantly itching also:

It works really well for tonto! He barely itches at all when he has this supplement!

Just wanted to throw that out there!

All my guys actually get a omega 3 supplement already. It hasn't helped much in this case.

And Orijen looks good actually. I think I remember looking at the brand a while back when I was looking at picking a new food, and I think I ran into the same problem. It's not carried in Louisiana, at least not according to its store locator. I know myself well enough that it's just not a good option to pick a food that I'll always have to have shipped in, because I'd end up constantly running out of food before the new shipment arrived.

Maybe I just need to move to another state? That would solve a lot of problems. :P

California Natural Lamb and Rice is supposed to be a good food for dogs with allergies. It is recommended in part because it has a short list of ingredients. So, don't know if you have looked at it already, but thought I would throw it out there. They also make Herring and sweet potato.

Courtney,

I had a yellow lab as a foster not to long ago and after he went through HW treatment he was very itchy and could not hold down food... we put him on the above grain-free solid gold and it didnt really help him but we later found out he just had bad reactions to the treatment so it may not have been a food issue from the begining...I forgot about this food but remembered it was grain free...

Taste of the Wild's Pacific Stream formula doesn't have chicken or beef in it.

Don't they also have a venison formula too? That might be the way to go Courtney.

I think the other two formulas have chicken meal in them, but I am not positive.
