URGENT! M BC Puppy in Baton Rouge, LA *Rescued*

This little boy has not yet made it to the Petfinder database. His status is unstable right now due to major changes at the shelter. He looks to be around 10-12 weeks old.

If interested, contact the shelter directly at 225-774-7700, or contact me via posting here. If you contact the shelter, ask to speak with Debbie Pearson. You will need to tell them that he is located in the puppy kennels between the T-kennels and the camper.

That's strange. I can see the pics. I tried to copy and paste them from the e-mail, but this wouldn't let me do that. So, I went to the properties and copied the link, like I do with Petfinder pics. Is there some other way that I can copy/paste them here from my pictures folder?

If you save the pics to your computer you can post them on here as an attachment . First Click on Upload Attachment below >> Click on Browse >>> then you select the image from your computer >> Click on Add File >>> Click on Place File Inline and voila

Actually, that's one of his 6 cage-mates walking over him. It's a cute brindle/white something or other. "Gets along with other dogs" is definitely in this guy's bio!!!

I'm from BR, and would love to have a male BC puppy. I had a BC mix growing up that passed away recently, and the dog was incredible. Unfortunately, I am a student and live in an apartment, and I'm going to have to try to convince my parents to consider adopting again. Unfortunately they have a difficult situation with a "disabled" cat that could complicate matters.

This cute little guy is now in danger of being PTS. The shelter is getting crowded and has had a LOT of bad press lately about the overcrowded situation since they tried to go "No Kill".

Unfortunately, he, along with a LOT of other dogs there, do not have Petfinder listings yet. A non-profit organization took over the controls of this shelter on August 1, 2011, and it has been nothing but chaos ever since. They are Nathan Winograd fans and are attempting to make this a No Kill shelter, which has resulted in absolutely gross overcrowding and totally inhumane conditions. The law enforcement side of the local Animal Control office had to go in and file charges against them, and they have gotten somewhat better. However, rather than keeping up with a rather steady PTS rate based on specific criteria, they wait until they are overcrowded, then start killing for all sorts of reasons.

I'm in BR now, and I'm involved with CAA who overtook the shelter a few months ago. I was also involved with the shelter PRIOR to takeover. Yes, things have been tricky since the switch-over and some upper management was a little lofty in their goals BUT having that shelter change hands is the best thing that could have happened. A huge misconception about this change-over is that people think CAA was making it completely no-kill which is false. They are of the understanding that:

"No Kill means that no healthy, treatable, or rehabilitatable dog or cat is put down at the community shelter because of insufficient space. Achieving No Kill is a process that doesn't happen overnight, and requires establishment of a number of programs, including a proactive in house and off site adoption program, broad based foster care, TNR for feral cats, rescue organizations , a high degree of community support, and in house volunteer pool.
At this point, we are a long way from No Kill. Some folks are mistakenly making that statement, but it just isn't true, and no one in CAA would make that claim. When CAA took responsibility, the expectation was that if anything, the kill rate might go up initially, because of increased numbers of animals coming in to the shelter."

A lot of the problems are coming from word getting out that it was no kill so a huge influx of animals came in because people figured they were "safe". Also, other shelters were turning away animals and sending them to the CAA shelter so they didn't have to deal with them. And not only that, there has been a lot of sabotage from those who disagreed with the switch (including folks who work on the animal control side of it). Before this shelter changed hands, most everyone who worked there didn't give a damn about those animals nor did they care about adoptions (excluding Debbie, she's awesome)....think 90% euthanization! I volunteered there before the switch and am completely thrilled that it's changed hands. All of the BR rescues are working their butts off to improve the shelter and many many people (myself included) are working any free moment to help pull animals, find them homes, and just help any way we can. I've never seen so many people that were so passionate about these animals.
Sorry about the tirade but it needed to be said. As far as the pup, he's a lot safer now than he would have been a few months ago. Honestly, he probably would have been dead already. There are some amazing dog rescues like Yelp! that pull dogs in the double-digits all the time...that being said, I would love for someone to step up and pull this guy. Regardless of whether this shelter is no-kill or not, it's not a nice place for a dog to live.

Doesn't come across as a tirade. Comes across as a factual but heartfelt explanation of the facts. Being identified as a "no kill" shelter when that is not the case causes all the problems you mentioned plus others you didn't mention.

All we need is a temp foster to pull this pup for 2 weeks. On October 4 or 5 this pup can join the Yellow & White BC girl

on a transport from Baton Rouge to Atlanta where both will be housed at Casa de Foster Failure while being offered for adoption through Ruffus Rescue. We will reimburse for reasonable vet fees during temp foster.

Look at it this way:
You get to play with a puppy for two weeks for FREE!!!
PLUS, you get to place your bet into the pool that guesses how long Art will survive after his wife sees the two new additions to La Casa.

In all seriousness, this pup is urgent. Hope someone in the Baton Rouge area can help.
