Hello. I saw this post and created a username to reply.

I called the animal shelter, spoke with the staff and supervisor, and the first puppy, Austen was placed on hold for me.

Here is the temporary problem. I live in NY, however; I am in Florida on vacation. I have secured a ride to pick the puppy up on Thursday (the last day that the puppy will be held for me). The ride to pick up the dog is 5 hrs and 45 minutes. Unfortunately, Southwest will not allow me to bring the dog on the plane with me this Sunday when I return to NY because the puppy won't fit under my seat. Can somebody please help me secure transportation or offer advice as to how I can transport this dog to NY?

I would love to give this puppy a home. I previously adopted a border collie that died two years ago at the age of 13 years old. We have a large, warm home to offer this puppy. Thanks.

Respectfully,

Justin

There are a few avenues to consider:

1. Volunteer Surface Transport - There are several volunteer groups that arrange "daisy chain" transports by car or truck to distant areas of the country. They operate only when all the legs of the transport are filled. Each leg is usually 45-90 miles. You can see that would entail a lot of needed volunteers between south Georgia and New York. The problem is timing. Such transports are irregular and operate only as ALL the volunteer legs are filled.

2. Airlines - Airlines have a bad record of transporting dogs, especially puppies and especially in the hot weather that is now upon us. The dog must have had all shots and have been quarantined for 14 days prior to the flight.

3. Pilots 'N Paws - A volunteer network of private pilots who fly "daisy chain" transports of much longer legs than the surface transports. They maintain a website and one can post on the website for transport.

4. Commercial Transport - The best known between FL and NY is Peterson Express Transport Services http://www.petsllc.net/index.php
Highly recommended. They also have a shot and quarantine policy.

Good luck adopting a BC!

Depending on your time restrictions, I can think of another option: ditch the plane, rent a car, and drive home. It may seem at first to be an expensive choice, but consider that any reputable transport is going to require the puppy be quarantined out-of-shelter (10-14 days) and get a health certificate prior to travel. You also have to find someone to put the pup on the transport. And the transport itself will charge you (other than PNP, but PNP requires clear travel conditions, so there's a predictability issue there. You also may have trouble finding pilots willing to donate for an adoption versus rescue; its up to the individual pilot).

Two BCx Pups, Springfield GA AS (Adopted)

New postby jcolon2 on Thu May 03, 2012 10:33 pm

I adopted "Austen" today- a family member and I got up at 5 am, drove to the shelter, and made it home by 10 pm (long day)! Here's some info about my newest family member. He's 15.2 pounds and anywhere between three and four months old. He is now all up-to-date on his shots- I had his second rabies shot administered today and I obtained a health certificate for him. He is far from the timid, stressed dog that I expected to adopt from a shelter. The minute I arrived at the shelter he came to greet me, and I prayed that he was the border collie I was adopting; he was! The shelter was kind enough to give him a bath for me. He is extremely playful and loves to lick. He is playing with the other dog in my aunt's house and he is hopping all around and slapping the bigger dog with his paws- he makes me a bit nervous lol. He's eating well and has enjoyed his three walks already- he is great on the leash. I was told he's housebroken, however; he is not. We'll work on that. I've included some pictures. I can't wait to get him to my home in NY. Thanks for posting "Austen's" information on this forum. I found the perfect border collie. Tomorrow, he will be getting id tags, a collar and leash, toys, and he will be getting microchipped! It feels great to have a border collie in the home again!

Wow, what a lucky catch, for you both, Justin! He is even way, way cuter than his shelter picture showed. Wishing you two all the best. Thanks for the update!

MollyATL: I was told that Artie was already adopted. The dog I adopted was the last of a litter of approximately 4 dogs, that was adopted. : )
